New Manager Announced for Chelsea Women following Emma Hayes' Departure
The Chelsea Women's team has announced Sonia Bompastor as their new manager, replacing Emma Hayes who is leaving the club.
43-year-old Bompastor, who comes to Chelsea on a four-year contract, formerly managed the French club Lyon for three seasons. During her time there, she led the team to three consecutive Division 1 Feminine titles and a Women's Champions League victory in the 2021/22 season.
While Lyon did make it to the finals in the European tournament they lost 2-0 to Barcelona this season.
Following her appointment, Bompastor expressed her excitement, saying, 'Joining Chelsea Football Club as the head coach of the women's team is an incredible honour. I am joining an institution of English football and I am committed to giving my all to this new project, fulfilling the ambitions of the club, staff and players.
'I am excited for this new adventure and am committed to continuing Emma's legacy and the great work done in recent years.'
Also speaking on her appointment, General Manager Paul Green said, 'Myself and the sporting directors conducted a rigorous recruitment process to find Emma's replacement. Sonia's vision for the team, her coaching philosophy and her proven ability to win made her the standout candidate.
'She is a world-class coach with a proven track record of success on the biggest stages and this will command immediate respect within the team.'
