Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has responded to criticism from former club captains Roy Keane and Gary Neville over his conduct on the pitch. During United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool last month, Keane suggested that Fernandes' body language was "disgraceful", while Neville described his performance as "embarrassing at times" and claimed that it was not that of a captain. Fernandes has defended his behaviour, suggesting that it is a result of his determination to win and the frustrations that come with losing.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Fernandes said, “I think obviously sometimes I go over the line, I know that. But as I said, it can happen with the game and it’s difficult to control the emotions. I never try to be disrespectful with anyone obviously. We are all competitive, we all want to win and I just think that the way I play, the way I feel the game, the passion I have for the game is the way I feel better and I feel that I can give the most to my team and to my club."

He added, “I don’t want to lose any game. I'm really competitive, I always try to push and give the best of myself and also push the others to give the best of themselves because if I ask someone or if I’m on the pitch and see someone that I’m speaking to them and try and say something, it’s because I believe that they can do better than what they’re doing."

Fernandes also mentioned that it is a pundit's job to focus on the negatives, but he cannot control what they say. He only wants his teammates to be happy with his performance.

Recently, Fernandes received a controversial yellow card in the Europa League match against Sevilla. However, he put in an outstanding performance as captain against Everton. Manchester United will be playing against Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday, while the Women's FA Cup semi-final against Brighton is scheduled for 15 April 2023.
