Erling Haaland, who has been astonishing everyone with his exceptional score rate for Manchester City, was another strong contender. Although Messi's long-standing competitor Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal did not feature in the competition this time, as he was not listed among the shortlists for the first time since 2003.
