Early January proves to be a busy period for awards contenders, as critics' awards and exclusive lunches present final opportunities to catch the eye of Academy members before voting commences. This year, due to the lasting impact of the SAG-AFTRA strike, the stakes are even higher. The Academy’s Governors Awards, typically slated for November, took place on Tuesday night. John Mulaney played the role of brilliant host, while Angela Bassett and Mel Brooks stole the show. The Emmy Awards, which have been rescheduled from their regular September timeslot, will happen this coming Monday, right in the thick of Oscar voting season. It's likely that it would be hard to find a tuxedo for hire in the entire city of Los Angeles.

This week, the Little Gold Men podcast team reflects on this notably busy period, discussing their learnings about the state of the competition from the Golden Globe and SAG award nominations. Some contestants saw a significant boost in their chances, specifically Oppenheimer - will their win be just a victory or a major one? The nominees for films that required maximum visibility also got a significant push. The team also delves into the upcoming Emmy Awards and the competition that, despite the voting having taken place last August, still remains hard to predict. You can examine all of our Emmy predictions and return to discuss who had the accurate forecast.
