All You Need to Know About the Paramount Project: Mean Girls the Musical Movie, Tina Fey's Role and More

The Mean Girls the Musical movie is happening, and Tina Fey is leading the charge!

“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement to Playbill in January 2020. “It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe, and I love them dearly.”

Fey wrote the original 2004 film, which included Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, Rachel McAdams as Regina George, Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith, and Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Wieners. Fey portrayed the character of Ms. Norbury, with her longtime friend, Amy Poehler, also appearing as Mrs. George.

Other cast members in the original film included Jonathan Bennett, Lizzy Caplan, and Daniel Franzese. The film revolves around new girl Cady as she tries to navigate the difficult landscape of high school, becoming friends with the "Plastics" before learning the difficult lesson that some friendships don't last.

The hit Broadway musical that premiered in 2018 will be adapted for the big screen. Reneé Rapp, who played Regina George in the Broadway musical, will play the role in the upcoming film.

“Mean Girls was such a big part of my childhood,” Rapp said. “It’s gonna be a very exciting, authentic take on what Mean Girls is and what Mean Girls means to us as kids.”

Amanda Seyfried has suggested that she and the other Plastics would love to come back for the movie. “All four of us are 100 percent into it,” the Mank actress told ET in February 2023.

While Fey didn't confirm Seyfried's possible cameo, she did tease the "incredible cast" during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers show in February 2023. “We have an amazing cast,” she said. “I’m super excited about the cast.”
