NFL Mistakenly Refers to Travis Kelce as 'Travis Switt' in Preview Video for Chiefs-Dolphins Match
Travis Kelce of the NFL has gained himself a new moniker that reflects his relationship with girlfriend Taylor Swift. Ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs’ upcoming clash with the Miami Dolphins, Kelce was dubbed "Mr. Swift".
The video that announced the fascinating Wild Card game on 13th January, Saturday, has the commentator stating, “The Dolphins didn’t lock wideouts up this year. They gave up a 108.3 rate to tight ends, seven touchdowns, only one pick, and now they take on Travis Swift.”
This delightful nickname "Travis Swift" wasn't the only highlight of the video. The reel also showcased Taylor, 34, animatedly rooting for Travis, 34, at Chiefs' showdowns. There were clips from a 20th December 2023 game at Gillette Stadium against New England Patriots, where the pop icon was pulling faces. Another snippet captured Taylor’s much-talked-about handshake with fellow Chiefs WAG Brittany Mahomes at an October 22, 2023, game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
It was in September of 2023, two months after they started dating, that Taylor and Travis announced their relationship. Her first appearance in the Chiefs stadium was caught in glimpses onscreen as she sat with Travis' mother, Donna Kelce, cheering for a victory against the Chicago Bears. The stadium has been regularly frequented by the “Cruel Summer” star ever since, for both home and away games.
It is also worth noting that the NFL has brought Taylor into their promotional activities. They have used her songs in promotional videos, created Taylor-related memes, and referred to her relationship during games. Given that the Chiefs-Bears game attracted a whopping 24.3 million viewers, the highest that week, their promotional strategy seems justified.
In October 2023, Travis voiced his thoughts about the NFL's strategy of showcasing Taylor.
While discussing their “New Heights” podcast, Travis told his brother Jason Kelce that he felt that the coverage was a tad too much. He said, “I think it brings a little more to the atmosphere, it brings a little bit more to what you’re watching, but … they’re overdoing it a little bit, for sure. Especially my situation.”
Many NFL fans were irked by the romantic relationship and wished for the camera to focus on the game. Countering the critics in her December 2023 interview for TIME's Person of the Year, Taylor said, she had no control over the coverage. She said, “I don’t know how they know what suite I’m in. There’s a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don’t know where it is and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast ... I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads and Chads.”
However, Taylor is delighted by her newfound interest in football. She observed, "Football is awesome, it turns out. I've been missing out my whole life."
