TODAY Show anchor Craig Melvin is celebrating a sweet and nostalgic milestone with his daughter.

On January 21, Melvin took to Instagram to share an adorable video of his nine-year-old daughter, Sybil Ann, practicing the recorder, a woodwind instrument familiar to many students across the United States.

For countless adults, learning to play the recorder is a core childhood memory.

The plastic, flute-like instrument has long been a staple of music education programs thanks to its affordability and accessibility, making it easy for schools to purchase in bulk for students.

Similar to the flute, the recorder is played by covering and uncovering a series of holes with your fingers to create different notes while blowing into the opening at the top.

Introducing the recorder in school settings allows music teachers to familiarize students with the basics of playing an instrument while also helping develop fine motor skills.

In the sweet clip Melvin shared, Sybil notices her dad filming her and quickly becomes self-conscious, calling out to him to “stop.”

“It’s just for my personal collection,” Melvin insists, prompting a reluctant “fine” from Sybil before she continues rehearsing as the family dog can be heard barking in the background.

After she finishes the song, Melvin proudly congratulates her, saying, “Way to go, sweet girl!”

Melvin continued his lighthearted tone in the post’s caption, joking, “Don’t tell her I posted it. Our dog, Myles, really enjoyed or…”

Fans in the comments section shared their love for the moment, with many reminiscing about their own recorder days.

Fellow news broadcaster Morgan Chesky wrote, “She’s far better than I was! Held a concert in my grandparents living room where I charged a dime per ticket… Ran out crying when I butchered hot cross buns.”

“Oh I remember those recorder days!” one commenter added.

“You’re a good Dad. I had my kids practice on the patio. I told them it would make the neighbors happy to hear such lovely sounds 🤣” another chimed in.
