"Top Fragrance Trends of Today, Backed by Data"
Finding the fragrance that’s just right for you can involve a bit of trial and error, especially as trends in the scent space seem to come and go. Recent data from Spate pointed to some of the trends that have had staying power over the past year and just keep getting more popular. From fun, youthful perfumes to cozy, warm fragrances, these are the scents everyone is obsessed with right now.
Santal or sandalwood notes have long been beloved, but it seems they’re getting even more attention as of late. Other warm notes like tobacco, amber and coffee have been seeing more interest as well, so we predict those will be the standout scents of fall 2024.
Ones to try: Phlur Somebody Wood ($99), Maison Margiela Replica Coffee Break
Matcha is having a moment, whether it’s in your mug or on your skin. The data shows that matcha perfume had one of the biggest jumps, with a 192 percent increase in search year-over-year. Our favorite matcha perfume has been discontinued, but luckily, it’s still available in candle form—Maison Margiela Replica Matcha Meditation ($70).
Ones to try: Le Labo The Matcha ($107), Dossier Citrus Matcha
There’s always been a handful of people who veer towards the sweeter scents, but love for gourmand perfumes has become more common, with a 99 percent uptick in searches over the past year. Interest in vanilla perfume continues to grow steadily. Searches for caramel perfume shot up 102 percent, and creme brulee and marshmallow perfumes have also seen a notable increase in interest.
Ones to try: Prada Candy ($125), By Rosie Jane Dulce
Said to amp up sexual attraction, pheromone perfumes, have been a topic of interest over the last year, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere, according to Spate data. “Pheromone perfumes are fragrances marketed as containing human pheromones, chemicals that can trigger a social response in members of the same species,” cosmetic chemist Vince Spinnato told us previously.
Ones to try: The Maker Lover ($175), Glossier You
This was one of the more surprising trends we saw on Spate’s report. Interest in mint notes in fragrances has grown 88 percent year-over-year, so we suspect we’ll be seeing more minty launches in the coming months.
Ones to try: DedCool Rocco Mint ($90), Diptyque Minthé
Fruit-based beauty had a real moment this summer, from manicure trends to fragrances, but we think we’ll see them carry into fall as well. Searches for watermelon perfume grew over 150 percent over the past year, with pineapple perfume having a similar yet slightly smaller trajectory. Coconut, lemon and mandarin notes also saw a spike in searches.
