On Wednesday, Hunter Biden made an unanticipated visit to Capitol Hill. Throughout the event, Republicans maintained a demeanor that was anything but calm. Contrary to the former, they aggressively confronted him and even boldly claimed he lacked courage.

Accompanied by his legal representation, Biden attended a hearing by the House Oversight Committee. It was here that Republicans began proceedings to hold him in contempt due to his non-compliance with a subpoena requiring his private testimony. Even though the hearing was accessible to the public, it seemed his presence was not appreciated by Republican representative, Nancy Mace. She used her speaking opportunity to provocatively ask, “Who bribed Hunter Biden to be here today? You symbolize white privilege. By showing up at the Oversight Committee, ignoring a congressional subpoena, and disrespecting us, it raises the question: What are you scared of? You lack courage to appear before us.” When Representative Jared Moskowitz, a Democrat, proposed that the panel vote that would allow Biden to testify publicly, Mace interjected her colleague saying, “I’m speaking; are women allowed to speak in here?” She proceeded to state that Biden "should be immediately apprehended and sent directly to jail."

Upon hearing Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene speak, Biden exited the room. This prompted the representative from Georgia to pronounce, “Apparently you’re terrified by what I have to say. How cowardly.”

Following the hearing, one of Biden’s lawyers reassured the press that his client, the president’s son, is prepared to testify in a public format. Abbe Lowell argued that “Hunter Biden is and continues to be a private citizen. Regardless of this, Republicans have aimed to leverage him to target his father. Regardless of their inappropriate partisan intentions, we have, on six separate instances since February 2023, proposed to cooperate with the House committees to determine which information relevant to any valid investigation could be supplied.” During another hearing on Wednesday, supervised by the House Judiciary Committee with Republican members also trying to hold Biden in contempt for not testifying privately, Representative Ted Lieu questioned his GOP colleagues for not allowing Biden to testify publicly. His question was, “What are you frightened of? What are Republicans keeping from the American people?”

The Washington Post highlighted that last year Representative Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, defied a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee regarding the investigation of the January 6, 2021 incident. Yet, he was not held in contempt of Congress.
