Prince Harry Expresses Gratitude for Time Spent with King Charles During Dad's Cancer Battle
Prince Harry has spoken out regarding his father, King Charles III's cancer diagnosis. The Duke of Sussex made some remarks about his recent trip to the United Kingdom, hinting at his intentions to return quite soon.
In conversation with Good Morning America on the 16th of February, Harry, 39, stated, “As soon as I could, I caught a plane and headed straight to see him. There is no love lost between my family and me. I'm truly grateful that I've had this opportunity to fly out to see him and spend some time together."
While Prince Harry had been preoccupied visiting the future site of the 2025 Invictus Games in Whistler, British Columbia, he touched upon his arranged return trips to pay his father further visits. “I have other travel plans scheduled which will take me through or back to the U.K., offering the chance to stop by and spend time with my family whenever I can”, he added.
Since Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their senior royal responsibilities in 2020, his relationship with Charles has experienced some tension. Nevertheless, Harry has remained present during significant moments, including his father's May 2023 coronation. This was the last time they saw each other prior to Harry's trip to the U.K. on February 6.
A day after the palace announced that Charles, 76, was diagnosed with an undefined form of cancer, Harry journeyed to the United Kingdom. Charles received his cancer diagnosis after undergoing a procedure for an enlarged prostate on January 29.
The palace noted on February 5, “An issue of concern emerged during The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. Follow-up diagnostic tests have revealed a type of cancer. His Majesty has started a routine treatment course today and has been advised by the medical team to delay public-facing duties. In the meantime, His Majesty will persist in performing State duties and official paperwork as per usual."
Harry departed the U.K. on February 7, having devoted around an hour to the monarch. He did not meet his brother, Prince William, during his visit.
The king released a statement regarding his health status on February 10. He expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and good wishes he had received. He shared that receiving such positive thoughts was highly soothing and motivating, especially for those impacted by cancer. He acknowledged that openly sharing his diagnosis had raised public awareness and spotlighted the commendable work of numerous organizations offering support to cancer patients and their families across the U.K. and worldwide. His experience only intensified his lifelong admiration for their indefatigable care and commitment.
Charles chose to be candid about his cancer diagnosis to prevent rumors and improve public understanding around cancer. He conveyed optimism regarding his treatment.
