Prince Harry's Mission: Combating Climate Change in New York City | Vanity Fair
This year, Prince Harry has stepped up his travel schedule to further the work of Archewell, the foundation he started in 2021 alongside his wife, Meghan Markle. In September, Harry is planning to travel to New York City for Climate Week, the annual environmental event series coinciding with the United Nations’ General Assembly. During his trip, he will also attend events for a handful of his patronage organizations, including two with a connection to his late mother, Princess Diana.
“During UN General Assembly High-level Week and Climate Week in New York City, Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, will be in town to advance a number of his patronages and philanthropic initiatives,” said a spokesperson for the prince. “He will participate in engagements with African Parks, The HALO Trust, The Diana Award, and Travalyst.”
The HALO Trust, a charity that focuses on removing land zones from conflict areas, counted Diana as one of its most passionate supporters, and in 1997, she famously walked through a demined zone in Angola to raise awareness about the issue. Harry has been a supporter since 2010, and during a 2019 tour in southern Africa, he returned to the scene of his mother's landmine walk, which had become a bustling urban area with the name “Princess Diana Street.”
Harry’s involvement with the other charities he will visit during the trip also date back to before his exit from his role as a working royal in 2020. Alongside his brother, Prince William, Harry has been supporter of the Diana Award, which recognizes young people who have made improvements to their local communities, for more than a decade. Even after leaving his role as a working royal, Harry has continued to send messages of support to the award’s honorees. Travalyst is a nonprofit promoting sustainable travel that Harry helped to found in 2020, months before he left the UK.
Coincidentally, Harry’s brother Prince William visited New York City for Climate Week in September 2023, when he attended a summit for his Earthshot Prize and spoke on a panel alongside Michael Bloomberg. The prize’s third annual Innovation Summit is set to take place in Manhattan on September 24, but so far, William has not announced any plans to attend in person.
