Pop Star Sabrina Carpenter to Star in and Produce 'Alice in Wonderland' Movie Musical
Have you ever tried… falling down the rabbit hole?
Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is about to as she produces and stars in a new movie musical version of Alice in Wonderland.
The film is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic Victorian-era novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, most famously represented on screen in the iconic 1951 animated Disney film of the same name as well as a pair of live-action Disney features, including Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland (2010), and its James Bobin-directed sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).
Now, Universal Pictures is adding its own interpretation into the mix with Carpenter, Lorene Scafaria (writer and director of Hustlers), Marc Platt (producer of the Broadway and screen productions of Wicked), and Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment (the banner behind shows such as Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars) on board.
Variety reported that sources close to the deal said that it was Carpenter who first approached Universal with the project in 2024, then Scafaria came on board as writer and director.
Carpenter has seemingly held a long-time love for the iconic literary tale, throwing herself an Alice in Wonderland-themed Sweet 16 party back in 2015 and having previously signed on to a different movie adaptation of the story during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a Netflix news release from October 2020, it was announced that Carpenter had been set to star in and produce a film for the streaming service, titled ALICE, described as "a modern day musical set against the backdrop of a music festival called WONDERLAND."
However, nothing ever came of the project after it was announced. Since no title or plot information has been released about the present-day project, it’s currently unclear if it will bear any resemblance to the pop star’s 2020 plans.
With two Grammy-nominated albums under her belt, Carpenter is now best known for her singing, but she's also no stranger to acting.
Having grown up as a "Disney kid," Carpenter first rose to fame after snagging the lead role of Maya Hart in the Disney Channel show Girl Meets World. She's also played supporting roles in films such as The Hate U Give and Tall Girl.
However, this Alice in Wonderland project will be Carpenter's first lead role in a feature film as well as her first time as a film producer.
