Miley Cyrus isn’t holding back when it comes to her mom Tish’s questionable dating advice.

In a candid new family interview, the Disney Channel alum revealed that her mom hasn’t exactly been the best when it comes to guiding her love life. During a joint chat with New York Magazine’s The Cut on September 2, Miley joined Tish and her sisters Brandi, 38, and Noah, 25, to share a few honest truths about the family’s dynamics.

“Mom’s always wanted me to stay with the wrong guy,” Miley confessed. “‘Cause they’re hot.”

The Grammy winner—who was famously married to Liam Hemsworth before finding love again with musician Maxx Morando—didn’t hold back when explaining how she had to unlearn some of the dating standards her mom passed down.

“I ended up with a person who means a lot to me and treats me really well and respects me,” Miley explained of Maxx, whom she’s been dating since 2021. “I had to learn that the hard way because my mommy taught me the wrong way and then I had to learn the right way by myself.”

She added with a laugh, “I had to find someone who treats me with respect and then Mom never really put that on the top three of her must-haves. Mom was like, They need to be tall. My man’s hot as hell too. But my man also respects me.”

While Miley may be calling out her mom’s past advice, she did admit that Tish has grown a lot in how she approaches love—especially after tying the knot with Dominic Purcell in 2023.

“That’s because she found someone that is hot and respects her,” Miley teased. “That’s always the goal.”

Of course, Miley isn’t the only one to keep it real with Tish about romance. Her older sister Brandi also admitted she once warned their mom about moving too quickly in her relationship with Dominic, which came just 16 months after Tish finalized her divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus.

“I did tell you, you were rushing marriage a little bit,” Brandi recalled on a July 15 episode of Harry Jowsey’s “Boyfriend Material” podcast. “It scared me. I’m like we just got out of one marriage, why are we rushing into another? It just freaked me out. I’m just saying when you rush things, then you have to take a few steps backwards and work through a bunch of s–t that you skipped.”

Despite the playful critiques, the Cyrus women clearly have each other’s backs. Tish, who also shares Trace, 36, and Braison, 31, with Billy Ray, revealed that Miley was one of her biggest supporters as she prepared to walk down the aisle again.

“Miley was very encouraging,” Tish said proudly.
