Martin Short Responds to Speculation About His Relationship with Meryl Streep | Vanity Fair
Written by Kase Wickman
Is there a romantic relationship between Meryl Streep and Martin Short? The brief response, particularly from Short, is a resounding no.
“We are not a romantic couple,” stated Short during his guest appearance on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast. The episode aired on a Sunday when he affirmed, “We are just very close friends.”
The two acclaimed actors found themselves at the heart of romance speculations after they were seen together at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards that took place earlier in January. This acting duo shared the screen in the recent season of Only Murders In the Building where their characters portrayed a complex love affair. Both performers received nominations for their roles in the show, including their co-star Selena Gomez.
Following the Globe Awards, Short's representative confirmed that he and Streep enjoy a very close friendship and nothing beyond that.
Despite repeated rejection of the relationship rumors, Maher remains hopeful for the celebrated pair.
He pointed out the importance of power couple status in Hollywood with examples of couples, including Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie. He extended his power couple theory to current celebrities Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner.
On a lighter note, Short chipped in, humorously predicting the longevity of Chalamet and Jenner's relationship, adding that their potential split would cause him existential angst.
Long-time widower Short, 73, was married to Nancy Dolman who passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Meanwhile, Streep, 74, had been married to Don Gummer since 1978, but it was revealed in October 2023 that they had “peacefully separated” six years prior.
The representative for Streep explained that, despite their separation, they still care for each other while living separate lives.
The representatives for both Short and Streep did not respond to requests for comment immediately.
