Love Is Blind star Sara Carton revealed that she received new information about Ben Mezzenga just five days before their wedding, where she ultimately decided not to marry him.

After Sara, 29, and Ben, 28, got engaged in the pods during season 8, drama quickly ensued when his ex claimed he mistreated her in a viral TikTok video. The allegations created major waves in their romance, and Sara explained that it was a factor in the end of their relationship.

“The TikTok was hard. The TikTok is when I was like, ‘I have a lot more I need to get to know about Ben.’ I don’t want that to make it seem like that was my decision-maker because I continued moving forward thinking, ‘We can get past this.’ But that was big for me,” she told Us Weekly in an interview published on Friday, March 7. “And that was big for my family, for trust and making sure this is a safe person to be with and to get married.”

After she saw the initial TikTok video, Sara explained that she received more concerning social media posts about Ben. In one post, a person claimed that Ben had handed out business cards advertising his YouTube channel to past flings.

“I received that YouTube card [or a picture of it] five days before the wedding,” she recalled. “It was actually sent to me from a friend in Nashville. I was a travel nurse at the time in Nashville and his friend sent it to him. I was like, ‘This is crazy.’”

While Sara did confront Ben about the TikTok video, she chose not to discuss the business cards with him. “I kept it very close to my heart. I was like, ‘I can’t handle anything more. I cannot bring this up.’ So I just didn’t,” she said. “That was just one more thing [that] made me feel like, ‘OK, he may not be as genuine as he is saying or seems to be.’ And it all made sense after the wedding.”

Not only did Sara admit to having an issue with the allegations made against Ben, but they also didn’t seem to line up politically or spiritually.

“Ultimately, throughout our relationship and continuing to talk about the values and having those hard conversations, I felt like we never progressed,” she continued. “I was constantly asking and talking to him about these values way more than I ever would. Like, they’re important to me, but I wasn’t asking [about these topics] just to ask him — I wasn’t getting anything in return.”

Sara went on to state that she believed Ben had put her “in a very difficult spot” of having to frequently ask tough questions, including when it came to the importance of religion in his life. While Ben regularly attended church, he insisted that he was more spiritual than religious and didn’t agree with some of the conservative stances of the church.

The nurse said she “couldn’t put [her] finger on it,” but she knew “something felt off” when it came to her relationship with Ben.

“But every time he talked to me, he told me how much he loved me. And so it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m being so harsh.’ But it just felt off. I knew something was off,” she shared. “I had hesitations even though I was like, ‘I love this person. I can’t imagine him not in my life anymore.’ But I still knew I [couldn’t] say yes. It just wouldn’t sit right.”

While Sara and Ben did not get married during the season finale on March 7, fans can find out where they stand today when the season 8 reunion airs on Sunday, March 9, at 9 p.m. ET on Netflix.
