Kevin Costner reportedly gambled away his fortune during marriage to Christine Baumgartner
Kevin Costner has clarified the amount of personal funding he has invested in his long-anticipated film series, Horizon.
"There are rumors that I've put $20 million of my personal funds into this film," the 69-year-old shared with GQ. "In reality, I've invested approximately $38 million. That's the genuine figure."
However, this presents a problem. In a frank discussion, the Oscar recipient revealed to the magazine that he and his then-spouse, Christine Baumgartner, took out a mortgage on a beachfront property he owns in Santa Barbara.
"It's a ten-acre plot. I proposed, 'It's a great deal.' To which she replied, 'Yes, one more such deal and our finances will be in trouble,'" the actor humorously recounted, referring to his financial risks for his dream project.
He firmly refuted that his steadfast commitment to realizing his dream of a four-part Western was in any way responsible for the end of his 20-year marriage in 2023. Despite this, an undisclosed source told Life & Style that the handbag designer, worried about going bankrupt, chose to limit her losses.
"By doing so, she secured what was promised to her in the prenup," the informant observed, "and she didn't have to stand by and watch Kevin spend all his money recklessly."
But according to the father of seven, accomplishment doesn't come without hardship.
"I want my children to comprehend this aspect of my identity: I take actions based on my convictions," he conveyed to GQ, further elaborating, "Like everyone else, I experience fear. I have no desire to be embarrassed."
He also made it clear that his family had a home, which they wouldn't lose. As for the beachfront property he had mortgaged?
"Well, it's possible I might lose that. The real question, however, is whether I've lost myself," he pondered.
