Kate Middleton Displays Her Iconic Curtsy at Commonwealth Day Return | Vanity Fair

On Monday, Kate Middleton joined Prince William, Princess Anne, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester to commemorate Commonwealth Day at a Westminster Abbey service. When King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived, the Princess of Wales showed just how much she appreciates royal tradition by entering into a deep curtsy as a greeting. In a red Catherine Walker coat with a bow collar and a pillbox hat by Gina Foster, the princess followed the royal etiquette dictating the proper greeting for a monarch.

Following the event, Kate and William posted a message to their social media accounts about the meaning of the celebration. “Today is Commonwealth Day! A day to celebrate the shared values, diversity, and unity of the 56 nations that make up the Commonwealth,” it read. “This year’s theme, ‘Together We Thrive’, is a reminder of the power of fostering strong, connected communities, and empowering one another to build a better future.”
Kate’s outfit included a subtle homage to Queen Elizabeth, who made the voluntary organization of countries with ties to the UK a central part of her royal work. The princess wore a four-strand pearl necklace with a diamond clasp that the late queen commissioned in the 1970s. She also wore a pair of pearl drop earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana.
In March 2024, Camilla and William attended Commonwealth Day without their spouses. It took place just a few weeks after Kate was originally diagnosed with cancer, days before she announced the news publicly. King Charles was also taking a break from public engagements following his own cancer diagnosis. Even though her cancer is in remission, Kate has not returned to a full working schedule of public engagements. Still, she has had a few opportunities to show off her deep curtsy since her treatment ended last September. In December, she made headlines for a picture perfect curtsy during a Qatari state visit.
