The luminous Heidi Klum absolutely stunned at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in extravagant dresses and classic Klum makeup looks. The 51-year-old supermodel attended with L’Oréal Paris, whom she’s been working with for a year. “I’m super excited. I only just started with L’Oréal Paris a year ago, so this is like celebrating my first anniversary. And it’s been amazing. There are so many products, it’s like a real playground,” she told us during a chat before getting ready for the Cannes carpet. L’Oréal Paris has a special place at Cannes honoring women in film with their Lights on Women’s Worth Awards, so we chatted with Klum about the importance of having women behind the camera, her go-to mani and mascara and more.

“It’s just important to have women everywhere. I mean, for one, we get so much more done. We needed more girls at the top. What I love about L’Oréal Paris is that a lot of the important bosses are women, and I think it’s wonderful. For Germany’s Next Top Model, most of the people that are around me, the higher-ups, are also women. I also have a camera woman who has been my camera woman for my show in Germany for many, many years.

I mean, I always have a good time with a woman, because they know what it’s like to be one. A man just will never know, really. Women are more sensitive and more sensible, you know, we have the same issues, so I feel like it’s always a different sentiment when you work with a female. I also feel like in terms of angles, they have a different eye for things.”

“I was like, ‘There’s no way I’m going to change from L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara ($11) to anything else.’ And they were like, ‘Just give this L’Oréal Paris Panorama Mascara ($16) a try.’ I was like, ‘No, but I love my Voluminous’ and they’re like, ‘No, no, just give it a go.’ And I have to say, I swapped, now I’m a Panorama fan, so you should try it.”

“I love the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Midnight Cream ($30). It’s a very rich cream. From 40 on, I have been using a more rich cream. Before, I was using more of a lighter cream. I love going in the sun, I fly a lot, I wear a lot of makeup, and I’m always in front of lights, so I do like a rich cream. So, for me, Age Perfect Midnight Cream is the best. It hydrates and also repairs.”

“I like them long and impractical. I’ve always loved long nails. We’re shooting a commercial on Friday where they’re gonna have to go, sadly, but I get it sometimes they have to be a little bit more practical.”

“Just recently, people wanted to bleach my eyebrows again. I guess this was very much on trend to not have eyebrows. And I was like, ‘I’m not doing that. Think of something else.’ I feel like, after a certain age, maybe it also looks a little bit silly. I just also don’t love it for my face. I love an eyebrow, I think they’re so important. They’re kind of the frame to a picture. Plus, when they try to revert it back to your color, it never looks the same. I’ve done this many, many years ago. It turns kind of green or a little bit orange. It never just looks like it was before again, so it’s not worth it.

I had a bowl cut once. At lunch, I kind of felt like I wanted to get a haircut, and I did, and it was actually a Victoria’s Secret day. In the morning, I looked one way, and then we had lunch, and then we did another press event at the end of the day, and then I had this bowl cut. In Germany, everyone said I look like Angela Merkel. People didn’t love it so much. Also, my husband loves my hair how it is. He loves it long and very feminine, so I think for him alone, I won’t cut it because he likes it. I also wouldn’t want him to cut his hair short, so it goes vice versa. I love his hair long too.”

“My hair and makeup are kind of always the same because I’m me, I’m not slipping into being somebody else. So usually I have my hair kind of tousled and out. I always like a big eye look, so there’s lots of Panorama Mascara and a little Lumi Glotion ($17) for some nice highlights on the cheeks. Lip, I usually keep simple, if not kind of nude-ish, or I like the color Worth It ($10). That’s kind of my color range. I like more of a nude-looking lip.

This Cannes, I had quite big, impressive dresses from Eli Saab. They were very beautiful silhouettes with a lot of details. As soon as I saw them, I fell in love with the dresses. The first dress I saw on the runway, I took a screenshot and asked my stylist to get me the dress, and he did. So I was very excited to wear it.”
