Exclusive: Erin Andrews Discusses Cancer Screenings, Off-Season Insights, and Her Top Amazon Beauty Picks
As a passionate entrepreneur, national sports broadcaster, podcast host, hockey fan, wife and mother, Erin Andrews truly does it all—with a ton of energy. She’s also a cancer survivor, and advocating for screenings is super important to her, no matter the season. Starting today, she’s teaming up with AstraZeneca as part of a national public health campaign to educate and empower people to Get Body Checked Against Cancer. The campaign encourages people to take control of their health by talking with their doctors about their cancer risk factors and whether cancer screenings are right for them.
With a goal to inspire people nationwide to overcome the fear of diagnosis by sharing her own experience and motivating others to take control of their health, Andrews joins a powerhouse roster of NHL players, coaches, staff and fans committed to encouraging the hockey community to talk to their doctors about their own risk factors, when they should get screened and supporting their loved ones to do the same.
It basically always comes back to the story of what happened to me in 2016. The partnership that we have with AstraZeneca, the NHL Hockey Fights Cancer, is all about encouraging people to get their screenings and routine cancer checks because you want to make sure you’re okay. Listen, I get it. There’s a whole fear right now about going to the doctor. You don’t want to get bad news, and most times, you’re not going to, but back in 2016, I just went for a routine check with the gynecologist. I just went for my annual, which I do every single year. I got the call, which I knew wasn’t going to be a good one because it happened on a Saturday.
When your gynecologist calls you on a Saturday, you’re pretty much like, “Wait, what? Is this a telemarketer?” They called to just basically say, “Look, we found some cells, and it looks like you have cervical cancer, so we need to start taking some steps.” I was blown away, I was numb, I was having an out-of-body experience, but after I went through the treatments, after I went through the surgeries, I later realized if I had not gone to the doctor, this would have been a much worse outcome. I think the biggest thing I learned from that whole experience is you shouldn’t die from it. It is treatable, the cancer that I had.
It was that way for me because I went to the doctor. I had a routine checkup. That’s how we were able to find it. When I decided to come public with what I had dealt with, I was blown away by friends, by people who reached out and said, “I haven’t been to the doctor in years.” I get it. There’s a whole fear factor. It makes a ton of sense, but listen, you’ve got to get past that, and you need to take care of yourself. That’s why I love this partnership; it’s what I did, not knowing what the result was going to be, but it’s such an important message. Long-winded answer, by the way.
We have a limited-edition T-shirt under my WEAR by Erin Andrews brand, and it says just that: screen. It’s a great reminder for us all. We want to get our bodies checked against cancer, and that’s what we have to do. Go get screened. This is obviously something you can check out on nhlshop.com. They have it at the NHL flagship store in New York, which is super exciting for me. Like I said, it’s just a great reminder for everybody. Wear it loud and proud. I can’t wait to wear mine.
Oh, also, by the way, all proceeds from the sales of this screen T-shirt will go to the V Foundation for Cancer Research. That actually has been a foundation that’s been close to my heart for quite some time. I grew up working with Dick Vitale when I was in my 20s, who was behind the V Foundation. I know everything that he has gone through in putting that foundation together, his own cancer battle.
Yes, my wellness routine has a lot to do with managing my stress and staying physically fit. The biggest thing for me in my life is going to work out. It’s whether it is doing something online, if I’m at a hotel gym, which I am for six months out of the year when I’m covering football, taking a class by my hotel or my house. I love Pilates. I love circuit training. That’s a big one for me. I think that’s a big thing when you talk about mental health and physical health. You have to get it out and work it out. You feel a lot better about yourself when you do.
I recently had a cancer screening. I went to my dermatologist to have a body scan, and I burned off a couple of things, which wasn’t fun, but I’m glad I did it. I learned a lot about what I should be doing now in my late 40s about taking care of myself. SPF, SPF, SPF is going to be my new best friend, especially when I’m on the football field for four to five hours a day.
Besides skin care, I love supplements. Thorne supplements are a big one for me and how I try to take care of myself on the road and off the road. I have a young baby that I want to be healthy and around and energetic for…but I just realized I forgot to take my supplements this morning. Shoot! But it’s O.K.
Yes, I can take a break, but I think anyone who knows me knows that my breaks are not your typical break. I’m trying to. It’s nice not to have to run and go do an interview, a Zoom, with a team, try to read a thousand articles a day. I actually can catch up on some fun TV, actually try to watch White Lotus. We’re trying to finish The Bear because we didn’t last year.
Right now, I’m also reading a new Mel Robbins book, The Let Them Theory. I kind of feel like that’s a fun little escape for me. I can’t do that stuff during the football season because it’s so consuming, but yes, we’re going to take a couple of trips coming up. Honestly, it’s been some really nice time reintroducing myself to my kid, getting to go to these classes with him. I took him to Target the other day and was laughing. He’s like a mini version of Larry David walking around the entire store. I really enjoy doing these fun little things that I don’t get to experience during the season.
For skin, I am really, really big on just moisturizing. Big on serums and everything like that. Some masks. I love Augustinus Bader. I’m really into this serum by Plated. I also have this mask I would do every night before a game or an interview. It’s called the CO2Lift. It is fire and amazing, and your skin looks so fresh and lifted. It’s really, really good. I have a new mask from HigherDOSE that I’m excited about and that I can take on the road. It’s got an infrared to it. SPF, SPF, SPF is now going to be part of my new line that I’m bringing, obviously, on the road.
Let’s see…what else…let’s just say I have battled with my skin. I’ve been very vocal about this. I did have to try some new creams and everything for that. For hair, I’m obsessed right now with RŌZ. I love her masks, and I love her shampoos. I had a tough go with my hair this year. It’s fair to say maybe it was a little too over-styled…so we’re trying to get back on the mend. I may lay off the highlights a little bit.
I’m into Nécessaire. All of their products—their body butters, their skin creams—I’m obsessed with them, especially with traveling so much, being in hotels.
I have to tell you the one thing that saved my life: The Clean Skin Club towelettes. I take them on the road. You can buy them at Target. You can buy them on Amazon. It’s not an advertisement, but I wish it was. Those things are amazing. They take off your makeup. They dry your face. They’re recyclable. I love them so much.
Oh, yes. I’m in line for a couple. Now that I’m into my 40s, I’ve got some pigmentation, and I’ve got to take care of that. That’s what I deal with after my skin checks and everything else—I love a good facial. I have very sensitive skin, but I know it’s good to get in there to clean out the pores. I love anything they can do with, like the lift, the lasers, or any of that stuff. This summer is going to be all about restoring the damage I’ve done with pigmentation and aging via lasers. All that kind of stuff. I’m excited.
