One year after it was revealed that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s son, Miles, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Teigen is revealing how she’s making her son feel more included.

Teigen first opened up about her 7-year-old son’s diagnosis after she and her two oldest kids, Miles and 9-year-old daughter Luna were at the 2024 summer Olympics cheering on Simone Biles.

Teigen posted a photo of Miles and Luna holding up a sign. Also visible in the picture was the insulin pump on Miles’ arm.

Several days later, Teigen addressed the many questions brought on by the photo, telling her social media followers that she was “blown away by the kindness of this community, already.”

“A couple weeks ago, our Miles was sick, in the hospital, with a terrible case of shigella, an intestinal infection caused by bacteria in food or water,” Teigen wrote on July 31, 2024. “A lot of his friends were also sick with it, as they all went to the same camp and well, it happens!”

“But the doctors knew something else was off about his blood tests. I’ve learned since then that this is how so many young children end up being diagnosed with type-1 going to the hospital for something completely different,” she continued.

Teigen later opened up more about Miles’ journey with diabetes telling People, “we were thrown into this world of chaos and having to learn so much all at once.”

It took Miles some time to cope with his diagnosis as well. “Why me? How come not Luna?” Teigen recalled her son asking following his diagnosis. “He was really worried that it would affect if he could play sports. Can I have candy still? Can I have ice cream? All those things that only a kid would worry about.”

Now, Teigen is sharing some insight into how she’s making Miles more comfortable with having type 1 diabetes, including giving LeBron James’ Barbie doll type 1 diabetes as well.

In a video shared on Instagram, Teigen is seen taking the T1D Barbie, removing her insulin pump and gluing the pump onto LeBron James’ Barbie. “Turning T1D Barbie into T1D Lebron James for my son,” Teigen captioned the video, revealing James is Miles’ hero.

In a separate video shared a few days earlier, Teigen said time has flown by adding that “it feels like just yesterday we were navigating Miles’ type 1 diabetes diagnosis for the first time.”

“Looking back, I’m so grateful for the incredible T1D community that supported us through the ups the downs and everything in between,” Teigen said in reflection. “Your comments and your messages have been so critical in helping us navigate Miles’ diagnosis.”

Teigen continued saying it was the children’s books she got Miles’ that talked about type 1 diabetes “that helped me the most. Yes, I know, I am a grown woman and understanding what was happening through a children’s book.”

“Lately, Miles and I have been writing our own little family book,” Teigen revealed. “It’s part reflection, part coloring, because who doesn’t love a good crayon moment? It’s such a fun and creative way to process everything together.”

Miles even shared, in his own words, how he feels about having type 1 diabetes. “I kind of feel like, I don’t feel like it’s not like happy, but it’s not sad. So it’s kind of like calmish,” he told Teigen who got emotional over her son’s response.
