The actors from the beloved BBC period drama, Call the Midwife, have experienced their own fair share of romantic twists and turns, extending from the infamous 'Strictly curse' to off-screen relationships and enduring marriages.

The well-loved show, which debuted in 2012, successfully addresses substantial storylines with a distinctive warmth and charm cherished by viewers. The series centres around a group of midwives, brought to life by an ensemble of gifted performers, navigating their roles in East End London during the late 1950s and 1960s.

However, the drama is not confined to the screen, as off-screen romantic intrigues and entanglements have also developed. Helen George, 39, known for her role as Trixie Franklin, was recently glimpsed with co-star Olly Rix (Matthew Aylward), her on-screen spouse and rumours are circulating about their possible departure from the series after its 13th season.

The whispers emerged after Olly ended his seven-year relationship with girlfriend Natasha Fagri, and Helen parted ways with her husband, Jack Ashton, within the same timeframe. The co-stars are reportedly providing mutual support during these challenging changes, according to Mirror Online.

In a public statement, Helen declared: 'We separated some months ago. Our two precious girls are our priority, and I would ask for privacy as we navigate this new chapter.' An anonymous source suggested that the couple had simply grown apart, clarifying: 'The decision by Helen and Jack to split was amicable and no third party was involved.'

Olly was seen at his residence in West London, and later, Helen was spotted departing with a substantial bag and her pet Charlie, bound for her home in East London.

The Sun on Sunday report claimed that Helen appeared 'a bit dishevelled' on leaving and Olly was observed to be 'relaxed'. Helen's representative confirmed to Mirror Online: 'Yes, she went to visit a friend for a cup of tea - as friends do - and there is nothing more to the situation.'

Helen's personal romantic journey has been as dynamic as that of her character in Call The Midwife. She has spoken candidly about the challenging experience of her first divorce around the time she participated in Strictly Come Dancing in 2015.

Helen was previously married for three years to Oliver Boot, whom she met while filming Hotel Babylon, but they separated prior to her appearance on Strictly. Talking about her divorce, she revealed that taking part in Strictly seemed like a 'sort of therapy' after her painful separation, as focusing on dancing helped her during that difficult time.

She later fell in love with Jack, who joined the cast of Call The Midwife two years after Helen, and they built a family together, welcoming their first child, Wren, followed a year later by their second daughter, Lark, born in November 2021.

In 2018, Helen spoke fondly of her relationship with Jack, praising his kindness, humility, and qualities as a father. Recalling their budding romance on set, she said that the long shooting hours brought them close together.

Another long-lasting offscreen couple from the series is Heidi Thomas, 61, the show's creator, who has been married to Stephen McGann, one of the senior stars of the soap, for three decades. The couple share a son named Dominic.

'I live with Stephen McGann who plays Dr Turner and we've been married for nearly 30 years, so he's the character I know best off-screen,' she expressed to Good Housekeeping. 'I never show him scripts or storylines before the other actors see them, I believe it wouldn’t be fair on him to keep secrets. He's entirely in the dark until he has the script in hand.'
