Ariana Grande Suggests Ex Dalton Gomez Cheated on Her in New Song 'Eternal Sunshine'
Ariana Grande has finally shared her perspective. More than a year after she and Dalton Gomez went their separate ways, she provides insight into their separation through the titular track of her latest album, Eternal Sunshine, which came out on Friday, March 8.
The lyrics of “Eternal Sunshine” seemingly suggest that Dalton, 28, was not loyal during their marriage. “I revealed all my faults, all my deceptions, but you manipulated me like I was an Atari game,” sings 30-year-old Ariana in the chorus. “Now it feels like I’m looking in the mirror, hope you're comfortable with her.”
Later in the song, she continues, “So now we act in our separate scenes, now, now she’s in my bed, mm-mm, lying on your chest.” She further enumerates her grievances with their relationship in the first verse, crooning, “We both know I couldn't change you, it's fair to say you could say the same, can't reshape the truth. I've never seen anyone lie like you do, so repeatedly, even you start to believe your lies.”
Starting in 2020, Ariana quietly began a relationship with the real estate agent, and in December that year, they announced their engagement. In a small private wedding ceremony in May 2021, they said their vows. Just over two years later, rumors of their separation were confirmed following a period of speculation amongst fans. Their divorce was finalized in October 2023, with the legal paperwork stating their date of separation as February 20, 2023.
Throughout these personal upheavals, Ariana was working on Wicked abroad. In July 2023, it was reported that she and her co-star Ethan Slater were in a relationship. The news also shed light on Ethan, 31, having separated from his spouse, Lilly Jay. Lilly was reportedly taken aback and distraught when her husband, with whom she has a child, filed for divorce shortly after.
“Ariana is not a sisterhood supporter,” Lilly commented back then. “My family has suffered the consequences.” Ariana came under fire for being speculated as the cause for the dissolution of Ethan and Lily's marriage, but she has remained mum about the controversy ... until now.
She appeared to acknowledge being pegged as the villain in another song from Eternal Sunshine titled “True Story.” In this track, she belts out, “I'll embrace the role of the villain if that’s what you need, I know how this plays out,” and "I'll take on the persona of the bad girl if you want me to, if it grants you some solace. I'll be the one you love to revile, can't connect."
Ariana also responded to speculation about her involvement with Ethan in her song "Yes, And?,", which she dropped in January. The lyrics read, “Your business is your own and mine is mine, why are you so obsessed with who I'm involved with?”
