Aaron Carter's Demise: The Singer's Struggle with Addiction and Mental Health Resulting in Death
The cause of death for singer Aaron Carter has been determined to be the result of difluoroethane and alprazolam use. The Life & Style publication confirmed his passing on November 5, 2022, at his home in Lancaster, California.
According to the Los Angeles County Coroner's report, the well-known singer used difluoroethane, a gas commonly found in air spray cleaners and alprazolam, a drug that causes drowsiness and sedation before getting into the bathtub. This combination of drugs incapacitated him and caused him to become submerged underwater. The official cause of death is drowning due to the effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam, and it has been ruled an accident.
On November 6, TMZ reported that the housekeeper found the "I Want Candy" singer unresponsive in the bathtub. Paramedics arrived on the scene, but the "Aaron's Party" artist, who had battled addiction and mental health issues for several years, was pronounced dead.
Aaron Carter was 34 years old and survived by a son named Prince, whom he shared with on-off fiancée Melanie Martin.
On November 6, Nick Carter paid tribute to his younger brother's tragic passing through Instagram, stating that his "heart" was "broken." The Backstreet Boys singer, 42, wrote, "Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held onto the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed." He also called "addiction and mental health" the "real villain" of the situation.
"I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know," Nick continued. "I love you, Chizz. Now you get a chance to finally have some peace you could never find here on earth. God, please take care of my baby brother."
In addition to Nick, Aaron is survived by their mother Jane Carter, his twin sister Angel, and sister Bobbie Jean. Their sister Leslie died of a drug overdose in January 2012 at the age of 25.
Aaron had a troubled past that arose from his battle with addiction. In September 2017, he announced publicly that he was checking himself into a rehab facility, two months after being charged with DUI, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia following an arrest in July of that year. His DUI charge was later dropped to a reckless driving offense, and his other two charges were dismissed.
The "Sooner or Later" singer also faced mental health issues. He shared in September 2019 that he had been diagnosed with "multiple personality disorder, schizophrenia, acute anxiety, and manic depression" during an appearance on The Doctors. That same month, Nick filed a restraining order against Aaron, alleging that he made a disturbing statement about Nick's wife, Lauren Kitt.
At the time, Nick tweeted on behalf of himself and sister Angel, stating, "In light of Aaron's increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confessions that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child, we were left with no choice but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family," They love their brother and hope he gets the treatment he needs before causing harm to himself or anybody else.
Aaron denied his brother's allegations on Twitter, claiming that they had not been in touch for four years. Life & Style confirmed that the restraining order was granted after Nick and Angel supplied sufficient evidence.
The "Leave It Up to Me" singer announced in September 2022 that he began an outpatient rehab program voluntarily to regain custody of his son, Prince. At the time, Aaron told The Sun that a court order mandated Melanie to have temporary custody of their son following a domestic violence dispute. In February, he and his ex both requested temporary restraining orders against each other, Life & Style confirmed.
